About Ichi Oku House

Ichi Oku House is a theatrical production being created by Japan-based theater artist Kimi Maeda (me). I’ll be transforming an akiya (the Japanese term for an abandoned house) in Shimane Prefecture’s Iwami region into both the setting and main character of a performance piece. Once finished, audiences will walk through the house and experience moments of live shadow and object theatre, as well as interactive room-sized installations that use natural materials, found objects, light, video, and sound.

Ichi Oku House will explore the burden and blessing of memories. Interweaving oral histories from the Iwami community along with stories from my family in both Shimane and America, Ichi Oku House will explore the impossible dilemma of deciding what we keep and what we throw away. These personal stories will provide a lens for examining even larger international trends related to the depopulation and abandonment of rural communities.
